Media Awareness

In our grade 8 health classes, students have been working on a unit from Manitoba Education.  We have been looking at how the media is used to influence young people, how gender is portrayed within the media and how they can take action.  On this site, I have included some of the work that our students have done to demonstrate their learning.  I hope that you enjoy reading their works as much as I did!

  1. This post is from a grade 8 student, Kaitlee.....

    We Are.....

    We are the next generation,
    Of this beautiful nation.
    Don't listen to the media!
    Instead, go on Wikipedia.
It will tell you all about
How they fill our heads with doubt.
Are we beautiful or good enough?
    Don't Worry! Stay tough!

Get up; Get up! Stand tall!
Come on, Come on! I'm callin' all!
    Don't be self-conscious!
    You are so gorgeous!

You're beautiful the way you are
You don't need to be a superstar.

  2. Here's a rap song that I did and actually performed for the kids.....

    Being Real - Being Yourself

Yo, my name is Mrs. George and I'm here to say
    My message is clean
    I'm not being mean
Today's kids are being brainwashed every day
Media is displaying our kids in a way
The media thinks they have the might
    But it isn't right
Take it from me, the creative health teacher
You know I've got your best interests here
    My message is right
    So let's unite
    And do what's right!

  3. This is another hip hop poem written by one of our very creative students.

    Don't be so tight!

The media is being so tight
They gotta be a little bright.

For the media is the joy of one
but should be the joy of all
They need to think of others
    and maybe some mothers.

They need to lift our spirits
    but here's my lyrics.

    Boys will be boys and
girls will be girls but the media
    can change and rearrange.
Get a brain, you will feel
    no pain.

Just because I have no fame
    doesn't mean I'm really lame.

    I lifted our spirits
    there's my lyrics.

  4. Here is a hip hop poem written by another student,

    The Media

The media tells us this and that
    skinny bodies
but all we need is to believe in who
we are, no one can see us,
    How beautiful we are.

    They need everyone to believe
that we are ugly and not enough.

So now we suffer from bulimia
The media won't let us believe

We are beautiful and wonderful in
    our own way.

No one needs to suffer from anorexia
The media won't let us believe

All the media does is make us
    lose our beautiful smile, our
    beautiful hair.
    Kill our voice.

The media won't let us think
    we think wrong
    now we are sick.

    Now let's believe and show
    the media we don't need
    skinny bodies and D.C. hats.

  5. Here's another hip hop poem written by three young ladies,

    Take a Picture

    Take yourselves a picture
to see what you can be
Me, I don't care bout what people
    should be.

Be proud of who you are,
don't let others tell you that
you aren't beautiful the way you are.

You are beautiful from your inside and out,
be who you want to be,
    You don't need to change
    cause you are perfect
    the way you are
That's cause the Creator made you.

  6. I'm Just a Girl

    I'm just a girl straight up G
I just want to be me

The media makes me look fat
But I ain't down with that

    So I'm here to say
    Go away!

So be who you want to be
    Scott Bateman girls

    I'm just a girl straight up G
I just want to be me.

Which is not gonna be long
This song is gonna be about
What is wrong and what's right.

    I'm here to tell 'ya
    love yourself
    and one another
cuz we all gorgeous in our own way!

    Don't listen to the media

  8. Paige's Song

    Hey!
We shouldn't care what the media say,
    We have our own mind,
so be yourself and don't waste time,

    We make the right choices,
We want you to hear our voices,

    We are smart
    We are pretty
    We want to be ourselves
    We don't want pity.

    We are not all dangerous
We are good, so what's the fuss?
We are beautiful on the inside and out,
    We will be smart,
    We won't have doubt,

    We make the right choices,
We want you to hear our voices

    We really don't care,
    about beauty or our hair,
We don't try to fit in.
We don't care who will win.

    We make the right choices,
We want you to hear our voices.

    Paige
